Photo editing with Picnik.

Workshop: Tuesday 11 January 2011 (2.30 to 4.30 pm).
There are now several websites which offer free photo editing. The one we like best – so far – is Picnik. The results are not quite as good as you would get from a program like Irfanview (the default image editor at the Agewell Computer Club) – but they are acceptable (and getting better) and Picnik is very easy to use.
At this workshop we will try some of the more ambitious photo editing features. For examples of what can be done in Picnik, look at the slideshow at the bottom of this post. The slideshow displays an original photo, and 19 design variations – all of them done easily in Picnik. That’s just a very small sample of the possibilities. None of them took more than one minute to make. We don’t claim that they are all good edits – but the number of possible permutations is huge, and we think that when you have got used to it, Picnik would be a very useful photo editing tool.

What we will do.
- Upload at least one digital photograph (or scan) to Picnik.
- Try as many different design transformations as we have time for.
- Download the best results back to your computer.
- Email at least one of them as an attachment.
What you should bring to the workshop.
At least one digital photo or scan (we have plenty of spare photos, but it’s better to have your own if possible). A good size would be 800 * 600 pixels, but don’t worry if you are not sure what that means. Your image could be on a flash drive, a laptop, or attached to an email – the important thing is that you should know where it is!
Example slideshow 1.
This first image (‘Original’) was the one we started with. The others are all quick edits done in Picnik. We downloaded the results, then uploaded them to Photobucket to make this slideshow. If the slideshow has stopped, click on the ‘Play again’ button.
Example slideshow 2.
This second slideshow is on the Picnik website, using photos saved in a free Picnik account.
[The Picnik website was closed 19 April 2012, so this slideshow has disappeared with it.]
Also on the same day …
- Our beginners’ session will be from 1.30 to 2.30 pm.
- Also from 1.30 to 2.30 pm, we will help anybody who needs to finish their applications for temporary census collector work.
