About the Agewell Computer Club (ACC).
What we do.
The Agewell Computer Club is a project of ‘Agewell in Hackney’, which is funded by the City & Hackney Primary Care Trust to support Hackney residents in the ‘mid life’ 50 to 65 age range.
We provide free computer and Internet classes for older beginners. You can think of it as a free Internet café – but it’s not just about learning computer skills. We have a constantly varying program, usually centred around the Internet – and anything else which has ‘digital’ in its name.
What we are really aiming for is to show you how you can use this new technology to improve the life you already have – getting involved in the community, being useful as a volunteer, finding employment, more frequent contact with your friends and family, saving money, saving time. More than anything else, we like to find ways to use the Internet to enhance our real-world lives – social activities in the community where absolute beginners can fit in as easily as the more experienced computer users.
Our methods are informal – no classroom teaching, no exams, no pressure – members learn what they want to learn in their own way at their own pace. Most people who attend are absolute beginners when they start, and surprise themselves by how quickly they learn.
We have a strong emphasis on developing and strengthening basic computer and Internet skills. We make sure that everybody who joins us has an email address that they know how to use, learns how to use the World Wide Web, and has opportunities to develop their interests in a personal direction.
How to join in.
The Agewell Computer Club is open to all Hackney residents aged 50 to 65 – and also to their carers and partners. All you have to do is turn up on Tuesday afternoon. If you are not already a member of Agewell in Hackney, we will register you when we meet you. As a member of Agewell in Hackney, you will be entitled to many other (optional) services aimed at enhancing your health and well-being.
Who is it for?
- Our funders expect that everyone using the service they pay for should be eligible for other Agewell in Hackney services – that they should be Hackney residents aged 50 to 65.
- Partners and carers are also welcome (they don’t have to be Hackney residents aged 50 to 65).
- Agewell in Hackney volunteers are also welcome.
Are you over 65?
If you are over 65, you are not part of our funders’ midlife priority group – but you can join Hackney Silver Surfers instead. It’s a free service for all Hackney residents aged 50+. There is more information on the Hackney Silver Surfers website hss.lawns.org.uk.
When and where.
- Our regular days and times are Monday and Tuesday afternoons. There is more information on our Program page.
- We meet at the Hackney Silver Surfers centre: 52 The Lawns, Matthias Road, London, N16 8QB.
- There are further details and a map on the Contact ACC page.
How to stay in touch with us.
If you are registered with Agewell in Hackney, you may receive a monthly postal update of all Agewell activities. If you want to be told about all the computing-related opportunities open to you at the Agewell Computer Club, you should make sure we have your email address! Don’t assume that we know it. It’s more likely that we do not know it.
