About Skype.

Skype is a program which you can use to make free Internet ‘phone calls’. You can talk directly to anyone else, anywhere in the world, who has Skype on their computer. The sound quality can be excellent, superior to a traditional phone. If you both have a webcam, you can see each other too (though video quality depends heavily on how good your broadband connection is).

Skype can also be used in ‘group’ mode – so several friends, or your whole family, or a workshop group – can join the call.

What you need to start using Skype.

  • An email address, so that you can sign up as a Skype user.
  • The Skype program (a free download from skype.com).
  • A broadband connection to the Internet.
  • A microphone to talk into (usually cheap, and nearly always incorporated in headphone sets, and often in webcams).
  • Speakers (external speakers for your computer are not essential, but much better than tinny internal PC speakers).
