Workshop: Tuesday 4 January 2011 (3 to 4.30 pm).
We have had requests for help with the online application for employment as a census collector. This is a text-book example of unfair digital exclusion. The census should be a good opportunity for older people with spare time on their hands – but the fact that both stages of the application have to be done online is a real obstacle. So we will start 2011 with at least one workshop to help people with their applications.
What to do before the workshop.
At the workshop.
After you have made the initial application, you will have seven days to to complete the second (and more difficult) stage. So –
- If you have already completed the initial application, we can help you understand and complete the second stage at the workshop.
- If you start the process at the workshop, you will probably have to complete the second stage without our help – because the second stage deadline will expire before the following session on Tuesday 11 January.
We are hoping that everybody who attends the workshop has managed to make the initial application, but you will get our help regardless of how much progress you have made.
What we can’t do at the workshop.
We can’t give you the correct answers for the exercises in the second stage. That’s partly because we don’t know what is correct and what isn’t – but mainly because your exercises are a test of your ability to do the job, so you must answer them in your own way. We will help you get your application completed and sent in – but we are not even going to read what you put in it.
Further workshops.
If there is sufficient demand, we will repeat or extend the workshop to the following Agewell Computer Club session on 11 January. We will support successful applicants with the online E-Learning component of their training in February and March.
Also on the same day …
- Beginners’ session, starting at 1.30 pm (help with email).
- ‘Enrolment’ (but with no tests or forms to fill in) for our series of First Click classes for beginners which will start Tuesday 18 January.

A message from the Census Recruitment Team …
One of the largest current campaigns in the UK has begun as recruitment gets underway to fill over 29,000 temporary part time and full time vacancies to make the 2011 Census a success – and we need your help!
We would really appreciate the help of AgeWell in Hackney in recruiting local people by spreading the word about the vacancies and directing people to our dedicated recruitment site: https://censusjobs.co.uk/ .
A total of 35,000 people will be required to deliver the census, which will take place on 27 March 2011. The majority of vacancies are for Census Collectors who contact householders to collect completed census questionnaires and assist where required. Over 29,000 of these roles are available in 2,000 locations across England and Wales.
These roles provide flexibility around working hours – there is the choice of working 15, 25 or 37 hours a week, so individuals can fit the work around their current commitments.
There are still vacancies for Census Coordinators to lead and motivate a team of approximately 15 field staff and for Special Enumerators to deliver questionnaires to organisations such as care homes, hotels, prisons etc. and help with their completion.
These are great opportunities to earn some extra cash close to home, as well as helping out the local community. Information from the census will be used to make important decisions around future policies, planning, services and funding for local communities for years to come.
Best regards, The Census Recruitment Team, census.networking@capita.co.uk

A new Monday morning Hackney Zoomers course.
The course is for people who are
- unemployed,
- or working part time up to 15 hours each week,
- or retired.
The main aim of the course is to provide practical help to people who are either actively looking for work now, or who think they might do so in the future (including people who are considering self employment).
- Course title: ‘Internet for job seekers over 50’.
- Date & times: 5 Monday mornings, 16 November to 14 December 2009, 10 am – 1 pm.
Job seekers with little or no Internet knowledge are seriously disadvantaged. They are often expected to do things they have never been shown how to do, for example …
- Find websites of which they have only partial knowledge or understanding.
- Use a web search engine.
- Navigate a complex website.
- Register with an email address and password.
- Fill in a sequential web form.
- Edit personal statements.
- Download documents they do not know how to open.
- Attach documents of their own to a job application.
If you are in that situation, we would like to hear from you. In 5 sessions we can’t make you an Internet expert – but we might be able to help you get closer to the job you want.
As with all Hackney Silver Surfers activities, there is no charge for this course.
Places on the course are limited so if you are interested, please contact us to book a place as soon as possible …
- by writing to Hackney Zoomers (52 The Lawns, Matthias Road, N16 8QB)
- or by email to workshops@lawns.org.uk
- or by phoning 020 7254 2183 .
By the way — you do not have to be a Hackney resident to join this course. Residents of other London boroughs are welcome.
Are you an unemployed older person trying to get back into work?
We are planning a series of workshops – starting Monday 22 June 2009 – for older people (50+) who are either
- Currently unemployed, and actively looking (or at least hoping) for work or training opportunities.
- In employment, but worried about your prospects in the near future.
The workshops will focus on using IT (including email, World Wide Web, and word-processing) to search for and apply for jobs — but they will not be IT training sessions. The primary aim will be simply to help you do the things you need to do, so that your opportunities will be as good as anyone else who has more advanced IT skills.
We think the workshops will be especially suitable for people who are applying for jobs that do not require IT skills – ie: IT is not part of the job description. If you are like that, you just need to find vacancies, and then apply for them. Beyond that, there should be no IT obstacle, except perhaps replying to emails that your prospective employer might send you.
It will all be about practical help — we will help you do the job search you already know you want to do, fill in the online application form you have already found, make sure that you have a working email address for employers to respond to.
If you need to improve your IT skills because you are looking for work that involves computers, you will be welcome, of course. We hope we can find a solution for you too.
The workshops will be held at The Lawns, but will not be part of the general Hackney Silver Surfers program.
The first (pilot) workshop will take place on Monday 22 June 2009, 10.30 am – 1.30 pm (but we should be able to do some preliminary work before then).
