Workshop: Tuesday 18 October 2011 (3.15 to 4.45 pm).
The last time we did this workshop was four years ago in 2007. We have had requests for a repeat from several members, so we are going to run it again after our First Click session on 18 October. It’s for people who are not doing the First Click Food sessions.
BBC Food isn’t just the best website about food and cooking we have found – it’s a model of how to make a good website that is easy for beginners to understand, with fresh content every week, backed up by an email newsletter (see the slideshow in this post). It’s a site you can join by signing up for special privileges.
At the workshop, we will …
- Create a BBC id.
- Explore recipes and create a personal recipe binder.
- Sign up for the BBC Food newletter.
- Learn how to use the BBC food techniques videos.
BBC Food links.
Creating a digital legacy for Ridley Road market.
Did you visit Ridley Road Market in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and/or 80s?
Do you have memories of buying kosher produce on the market?
Can you remember when you first saw a mango or yam on the market stalls?
A Taste of Hackney is an oral history project celebrating the history of Ridley Road Market as told by the people that have lived, worked and shopped there during the 20th century.
We are looking for people aged 50+ to take part in the project.
If you’re interested in sharing your memories and stories about the market, have recipes to share, or simply want to tell others about what the market means to you, we want to hear from you.

Hackney Healthy Eating Project, 2011.
This is a new campaign to encourage and support older people in Hackney to adopt healthy eating habits. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and we would like you to join us.
We need silver surfers who either have a digital camera, or who can paint or draw, or who have a story to tell in words. You don’t have to be good at it – just willing to have a go at getting better – and be part of a team of ‘digital reporters’ who will make a website about the Hackney Healthy Eating Project. We have made a start on the website already – hep.lawns.org.uk .
The Silver Surfers Talking Food group.
If you have got past the absolute beginner stage, and would like to do something original and useful with your digital skills – this is for you!
Members of the team will learn how to make visual stories with digital pictures, text and audio, and then create their own slideshows on the new website. The result will be a record of the Hackney Healthy Eating Project, the things we talked about, and our successes. Each member will probably want to do something a bit different. We call it digital reporting.
Where, when and how.
There will be special sessions at The Lawns on Thursday afternoons (2 to 5 pm) throughout October, November and December 2011. It will be easy to join us for the whole program, or just the sessions which interest you most.
For more information about this project, and how you can join, please read the Hackney Silver Surfers post ‘Hackney Healthy Eating Project’.
Taste of Hackney has funding!
NB: the original date for this was 9 August (we had to postpone it).
Victoria Coker (Different Drum Productions) has told us that the funding bid for ‘A Taste of Hackney’ has been successful, and the project will start soon.
Here is an extract from our original post on 5 May 2011 …
A Taste of Hackney is an innovative intergenerational project that charts the different contributions made by ethnic minorities to the culinary landscape of Hackney.
Participants will be trained in oral history, research skills, photography, web-design, blogging and app design and filmmaking to provide material to create the website, smartphone app (iPhone and Android), and exhibition.
The project will explore the Ridley Road market’s history from its humble origins in the mid 19th Century to its evolution as a hub of migration throughout the 20th Century.
Victoria is coming back to The Lawns to get you involved!
This project is a unique opportunity to learn and understand the Internet by being part of it, rather than sitting around listening to somebody else telling you what it is. Internet beginners can do this as well as anyone else. If you would like to join the project, or if you want to find out more about it, come and meet Victoria at The Lawns on Tuesday 20 September 2011 (3 pm).
By the way, Victoria’s latest flyer is on the web: Taste of Hackney flyer.pdf . She says “it’s rather generic and makes no reference to the truck load of new skills participants will learn.”
