Well-being in the broadest sense — that is what Agewell is all about.

Are you ready?

Senior man.

Am I ready?

A discussion group for men coming up to retirement.

We are holding some trial discussion groups in Hackney for men to come together and discuss what is facing people around the corner and how we can be a little better prepared. Some of us are concerned about future pension and finance needs; others are concerned about staying active and socially involved.

We will be discussing all of the issues above and whatever else people bring to the table. There will also be a chance to share information on support and resources available in the area.

This is part of a new programme developed by Age Concern Hackney and Common Ground aimed at preparing people for post retirement.

If you are male, over 50 and live or work in Hackney come along and enjoy a friendly, open and frank atmosphere.

When?

  • Discussion Group 1: Thursday 30 September 2010, 6.30 pm to 8 pm.
  • Discussion Group 2: Saturday 2 October 2010, 11 am to 12.30 pm.

Where?

Navarino Mansions Community Hall, Dalston Lane, London E8 1LB (Google map / Street map).

If you’re interested in contributing to the trials then please join one of the sessions above.

Workshop: Wednesday 19 May 2010 (10.30 am to 1.30 pm).

There is a huge amount of information and advice about health on the World Wide Web. But it’s not so easy to find it and use it — so that is why you should come to this special Adult Learners’ Week workshop. We will show you the most important web sites, and how to get around them.

You will also see a short film made by NHS Choices, and play an online quiz game to assess how well you are facing up to the health challenges of getting older and bolder. It’s not about dealing with ailments and accidents — it’s about lifestyle, understanding how to keep everything working properly, and finding contentment in the community you live in.

By the way — this session is suitable for absolute computer beginners.

We recommend you book your place in advance by phoning 020 7254 2183.

Venue (as usual) … Hackney Silver Surfers, 52 The Lawns, Matthias Road, N16 8QB.

Raising awareness of prostate cancer in African Caribbean men in Hackney.

Prostate Cancer Charity logo.

A message from Sarah Toule, Prostate Cancer Charity

We are calling on African Caribbean men and women across Hackney who have been touched by prostate cancer to help raise awareness of the disease and the fact that African Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men.

We are currently looking for volunteers in Hackney to train as ‘Community Champions’ to give awareness raising talks to the local community or help distribute our information.

We need your help in overcoming the cultural myths and the resistance to talking about prostate cancer in the community and we need men who have already experienced the disease to stand up and say to others that this is nothing to hide from.

For more information please contact Sarah Toule on 020 8222 7149, email olderandwiser@prostate-cancer.org.uk.

What do people think about bowel cancer?

University College London logo.A message from Dorota Juszczyk, Health Behaviour Research Centre, University College London

We are currently developing a questionnaire on bowel cancer. We are looking to recruit 30 people aged over 50 years who are willing to fill an online questionnaire on two occasions.

The completion of the questionnaire takes between 10 and 15 minutes. As a reimbursement for their time, we can offer 5 pounds that will be paid on completion of both questionnaires.
