We listen to many Internet Radio stations – but at this workshop, we are going to be an Internet Radio station. Come and find out how easy it is to do – and (if you want to) make your voice heard online!
About Internet radio.
It’s very different from traditional terrestrial broadcasting. When you listen to Internet radio, you are listening to sound streaming from the Internet. There are no transmitters, no licences and no need for a studio full of expensive equipment. Music performance rights must be respected (they are not cheap) – but talk is free. Anyone with a little technical knowledge can make their own Internet radio station for a very small cost. There are now tens of thousands of small, independent radio stations all over the world. They are not competing with the big operators, just doing their own thing.
At the workshop.
We will show you how to find and listen to some of the small stations, and some of the big ones too.
We will demonstrate our own low-cost, but fully-functional Internet radio station (Radio Agewell), streaming directly from The Lawns.
The workshop will double up as our end-of-quarter Agewell Computer Club party – with music from a small, established Internet radio station.
Skype is a computer program which you can use to make free Internet ‘phone calls’. You can talk directly to anyone else, anywhere in the world, who has Skype on their computer. If you both have a webcam, you can see each other too.
We have had many Skype workshops before, but this one will be a bit different. We are going to test and demonstrate Skype Group video calling. That means several people can join the same call – and all be heard and seen on video. We think it would be a good way to pilot a Skype network for people who are housebound, or stuck at home for other reasons.
At the workshop …
Everyone will create a Skype username.
We will show you how to use Skype on our computers at The Lawns.
We will test Skype Group video.
We will explain how to download and install Skype to your own computer.
We will show you how to put Skype on your flash drive (memory stick), so that you can use it anywhere.
Help us test Skype Group video before the workshop.
Skype Group Video requires one person in the group to have a Skype Premium account. That would be us – Agewell Computer Club now has a Premium account, so nobody else has to upgrade to join in. If you have a Skype account and would like to help us test Group Video – before, during or after the worshop – please add our Skype name ageweller to your Skype contacts list. We will sort out the details by Skype call or IM.

My Friends Online Week is a national Age UK event (19 to 25 March 2012) ‘to help people in later life discover the social side of the internet, learn the latest ways to make new friends and keep in touch with old friends and family’. We have registered our next Agewell Social Network session (Monday 19 March 2012) as a My Friends Online event – so, if even one person turns up as a result of the campaign, that is what it will be.

People working on this project are all Hackney residents, mostly volunteers, and are involved in local environmental initiatives such as Transition Hackney, Transition Stoke Newington, Transition Finsbury Park, Sustainable Hackney, Arcola Energy, The Green Party and Hackney Friends of the Earth. We want to help neighbours increase the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their carbon emissions and fuel bills. You will usually be visited by two people, one person who normally does this as their day job and one person who also has a good working knowledge of energy saving measures and resources.
We can also provide draft proofing strips and radiator heat reflecting panels at cost price. For vulnerable or disabled residents, we can help with fitting these. We are also working to create a network of local tradespeople skilled in sustainability adaptions who can help residents with improvments.
This is the Dalston Energy Angels project, coordinated by the Arcola Theatre and funded by the Dept of Energy and Climate Change. For more information visit the Dalston Energy Angels website or email anna@arcolatheatre.com .
YouTube is an online video-sharing site – one of the most websites at Agewell Computer Club. This workshop is aimed at people who feel the Tuesday afternoon sessions are too advanced – or who are busy on Tuesdays.
At the workshop, we will introduce you to YouTube basics – how to search YouTube for interesting videos, how to watch them, and perhaps how to download them. We will also take another look at YouTube Disco – a simple way to find music on YouTube.

This workshop is part of our response to the Hackney Life film project – and something we were planning to do anyway quite soon. We might be able to help you make your own short video (and we are trying to borrow a digital video camera, so we can make one at Agewell Computer Club) – but we can definitely help you do something that is required for the project participants – and that is upload your video to YouTube.
Most Hackney Life videos will be short clips made by amateurs on cheap gadgets: smartphones, digital stills cameras, Flip video cameras, etc. They won’t expect documentary film techniques, and nothing will be edited in advance. All they want is your raw amateur video. Nearly all our members could participate if they wanted to. The most difficult bit will be the upload to YouTube – so at the workshop, we will help you create your own YouTube account and show you how to upload your video clips from wherever they are at the time.
Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is not just for people who want to be part of the Hackney Life project. It’s for everybody – especially everybody who has ever wondered how those videos get to YouTube – and everybody who thinks they might like to try it themselves.
But if you are interested in, or undecided about, Hackney Life – you should come if you can. Kerry from Mosaic Films will be here to help with technical aspects, and to explain more about the project.
Haven’t got a digital video camera?
Sign up now! You do not need your own video camera to join the workshop! If you have one, bring it – but we assume that most people will not have a digital video camera of any kind – or they might possibly have a mobile phone or digital stills camera that will record simple video.
We are going to focus on online video: understanding it, finding it, using it, streaming it, downloading it – and making it.
We will start on Tuesday 6 March 2012 with a practical workshop on making and uploading very simple videos to YouTube – ‘YouTube for everybody’.
Then we will follow up with a spectacular three-week course ‘Video Essentials with Henry’, which will cover all you need to know about online video – including YouTube, Vimeo, BBC iPlayer and other catch-up download sites. The course will happen from 2.30 to 5 pm on Tuesdays 13, 20 and 27 March. We will give signing-up priority to people who attend the 6 March workshop.
We will be supporting people who want to participate in Mosaic Film’s Hackney Life project.
Haven’t got a digital video camera?
Sign up now! The workshop and the course are specifically for people who do not have their own equipment.
This is for people who think talking and listening is the best way to communicate online. Audioboo is a simple way of recording spoken messages (from a computer microphone or smartphone), and putting it online for your family and friends to listen to. It is very easy to do.
This is an Audioboo …

In a nutshell.
At the workshop, we will show you how to create an Audioboo account, then record short messages that your friends will be able to listen to online, or in an email that you have sent them.
Where: St. Matthias Church Hall, Wordsworth Road, N16 8DD (Google map).
How to get there:
It’s very close to The Lawns computer centre.
Any bus going towards Stoke Newington.
Nearest bus stop: Princess May Road.
Book your place: phone Juliet on 020 7241 5909, or email agewell@ageukhackney.org.uk
By the way: you can pick the dance sessions which most interest you – for example, you could attend the morning sessions and then come over to Agewell Computer Club after lunch.
We are going to relaunch our ‘We Seniors’ website – an online place where you can put your own photographs, links, comments, questions and get follow-up from completed workshops. We took down the previous version because most people found it too difficult to use – but the new version is intentionally very simple and very easy. Our idea is that new learners will be able to use it as soon as they have learnt basic email skills.
Of course, it won’t replace our existing Agewell Computer Club website. It will be an additional site that you can contribute to, and it will enable all Agewell members to talk directly to each other online.
We are going to use the same Posterous system that is working so well for the Hackney Healthy Eating Project. If you already have a Posterous account, you should definitely come to this workshop to learn more about how to use it. If you do not have a Posterous account, we will begin by helping you make one.
In a nutshell.
At the workshop, we will unveil the new site, and show you how to get started with it. You will also get more practice with email (including attachments) and digital pictures.
We have noticed that many of our members like to search for photographs that they can email to other people, or use as illustrations in documents, cards, etc. At this workshop,we will help you do it effectively and legally – the best places to search, the best way to download, and how you can keep the pictures you like.
In a nutshell.
Learn how to:
Search for pictures on the World Wide Web.
Download and save pictures that you are allowed to copy for your personal use.
