We are going to relaunch our ‘We Seniors’ website – an online place where you can put your own photographs, links, comments, questions and get follow-up from completed workshops. We took down the previous version because most people found it too difficult to use – but the new version is intentionally very simple and very easy. Our idea is that new learners will be able to use it as soon as they have learnt basic email skills.
Of course, it won’t replace our existing Agewell Computer Club website. It will be an additional site that you can contribute to, and it will enable all Agewell members to talk directly to each other online.
We are going to use the same Posterous system that is working so well for the Hackney Healthy Eating Project. If you already have a Posterous account, you should definitely come to this workshop to learn more about how to use it. If you do not have a Posterous account, we will begin by helping you make one.
In a nutshell.
At the workshop, we will unveil the new site, and show you how to get started with it. You will also get more practice with email (including attachments) and digital pictures.
Please reserve your workshop place.
Reserve your place by sending an email to acc@lawns.org.uk – and please read your email again soon after for our reply, as our workshops get over-subscribed very quickly. People who have reserved get priority, but must be there when the workshop begins at 3:30 pm.
Agewell in Hackney eligibility.
Our funders expect that everyone attending the workshops they pay for should be eligible for other Agewell in Hackney services – that they should be Hackney residents aged 50 to 65. However, sometimes we invite other people to join us.
This workshop is part of our response to the Hackney Life film project – and something we were planning to do anyway quite soon. We might be able to help you make your own short video (and we are trying to borrow a digital video camera, so we can make one at Agewell Computer Club) – but we can definitely help you do something that is required for the project participants – and that is upload your video to YouTube.
Most Hackney Life videos will be short clips made by amateurs on cheap gadgets: smartphones, digital stills cameras, Flip video cameras, etc. They won’t expect documentary film techniques, and nothing will be edited in advance. All they want is your raw amateur video. Nearly all our members could participate if they wanted to. The most difficult bit will be the upload to YouTube – so at the workshop, we will help you create your own YouTube account and show you how to upload your video clips from wherever they are at the time.
Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is not just for people who want to be part of the Hackney Life project. It’s for everybody – especially everybody who has ever wondered how those videos get to YouTube – and everybody who thinks they might like to try it themselves.
But if you are interested in, or undecided about, Hackney Life – you should come if you can. Kerry from Mosaic Films will be here to help with technical aspects, and to explain more about the project.
Haven’t got a digital video camera?
Sign up now! You do not need your own video camera to join the workshop! If you have one, bring it – but we assume that most people will not have a digital video camera of any kind – or they might possibly have a mobile phone or digital stills camera that will record simple video.
Please reserve your workshop place.
Reserve your place by sending an email to acc@lawns.org.uk – and please read your email again soon after for our reply, as our workshops get over-subscribed very quickly. People who have reserved get priority, but must be there when the workshop begins at 2:30 pm.

This impromptu workshop is mainly for people who came to our last Posterous workshop, and would now like some help on what to do next. Of course, everyone else is welcome too. It is essential to have an email address that you know how to use – but you don’t need much more experience than that.

Facebook is a menace to new learners – and not entirely safe for other people who have not investigated and understood what Facebook might do with your private data. The purpose of this workshop is to help you understand how Facebook works, and what you can do to protect yourself. The workshop will have two distinct sessions …
2.30 to 3.15 pm – the Facebook deletion party.

Join us for this if you have a Facebook account that you have a reason to keep. We will show you how to make it safer.
Internet for Beginners: Monday 9 January 2012 (2 to 5 pm).
Our Monday Agewell Social Network is the best way to start with us – especially if you are a beginner. We think learning about the Internet should always be fun – so we don’t do anything that is boring or difficult. Join us now to start learning about email, the World Wide Web, and everything that has digital in its name.
We don’t have anything specific planned for next Monday 9 January, because it will be our first Agewell Social Network session. We need to give people time to find out about it, and we would like to ask you what you want. Here are some of the ideas we have been discussing …
An Agewell blog, probably a bit like the website being made by the Hackney Healthy Eating Project. All the blog posts can be done by email alone. To contribute, all you have to know is how to send an email. So we can fill it up with digital photographs, audio, links to websites and videos – anything you like. It’s a really good way to learn how to use email, and get a visible result on the web too. We would have a different theme each month.
More First Click sessions, carrying on where we left off with the BBC Food site – and then investigating BBC Wildlife and BBC Gardening sites.
Internet Radio Disco Party – once a month, not necessarily at The Lawns – combined with our own Internet talk radio (Radio Agewell – it already exists).
A Monday afternoon Skype hub, for people who are stuck at home.
We will probably have some more ideas before Monday, but we would like to have yours too. Please email your brainwave to acc@lawns.org.uk .
We have funding for an extra Agewell Computer Club afternoon session each week, for the whole quarter. Our expanded program will be planned with the expectations of our funders very much in mind – we are aiming for tangible and visible evidence of how we support Hackney residents aged 50 to 65. We hope you will join us on both afternoons.
Monday afternoons (2 to 5 pm) – starting 9 January 2012.
Agewell Social Network.
Monday afternoons will be beginner-friendly, and will be tied much more closely to other Agewell in Hackney events. First Click, Internet for Beginners, and most of the Agewell Computer Club party-like and social activities will happen on Monday afternoons. They won’t all be at The Lawns.
The main new activity on Monday afternoon will be the Agewell Social Network. We will be making a website about Agewell in Hackney, with photographs, audio and video. It will be similar in many ways to the Hackney Healthy Eating Project program, but with a different theme each month.
Tuesday afternoons (2 to 5 pm) .
Agewell Community Computing.
Tuesday afternoon Agewell Computer Club will continue as it is now, but with just one main activity each week, for example – workshops and short courses which work best without a lot of background noise.
Agewell drop-in.
As always, the front area will be reserved for general drop-in by Agewell in Hackney members on both afternoons.
Breadfruit, sending email attachments, more YouTube, learning about MP3 audio files.
What do you know about Breadfruit?
Do you know where to buy it? Do you know how to cook it? Do you have any favourite breadfruit recipes?
Do you know how nutritious breadfruit is?
Would you like to share your breadfruit recipes and knowledge?

Plus … help make our YouTube video.
The student film crew from Middlesex University are coming back. We are offering starring roles and walk-on parts – or if you prefer, you can stay out of the shoot and do what you normally do.
How to join us.
If you want to, you can just turn up next Thursday 15 December at 2 pm. But it would be better to tell us in advance that you are interested, so we can reserve a place for you. Workshop: Tuesday 13 December 2011 (3.30 to 5 pm).
Cancelled.
We have just discovered that the conditions for joining Spotify have recently changed.
Now the only way to join Spotify is through a Facebook account. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you can’t use Spotify. Existing Spotify account holders are not affected – nothing has changed for them – but we were expecting to help new learners join Spotify.
Facebook is unsuitable and unsafe for Internet beginners, so the workshop we had planned cannot go ahead. We will do something else instead.
Plantain and banana, sending email attachments, digital pictures, learning about YouTube.
